History of Pakistan Union Norway
Pakistan Union Norway (PUN) was founded in 1970 as Pakistan Worker Welfare Union (PWWU) to support Pakistani workers in Norway with legal, administrative and translation services. Officially registered in 1973, it was renamed PUN in 1995 under the leadership of Mr. Qamar Iqbal.
Since then, PUN has grown into a distinguished organization serving the Pakistani diaspora in Norway through humanitarian aid, cultural events, and diplomatic initiatives.The Lahore Resolution was passed, marking the foundation of Pakistan on 23rd March 1940. PUN proudly celebrates Independence Day On 14 August. Today, PUN stands as a bridge of friendship between Pakistan and Norway.PUN also commemorates Iqbal Day on 9 November.
PUN’s commitment also extends to acting as a bridge for international collaboration. The union has successfully facilitated numerous high-level delegations and meetings between Pakistani and Norwegian officials, parliamentarians and business leaders. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, promoting trade and encouraging cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations.
PUN further enriches its community engagement by organizing a continuous calendar of political, cultural and intellectual debates and events throughout the year — inviting renowned politicians, esteemed intellectuals and prominent researchers to share their insights and foster meaningful dialogue on issues of global and national importance.
Today, PUN stands as one of the most distinguished organizations representing the Pakistani diaspora in Norway. Through sustained and multifaceted efforts spanning administrative support, welfare services, social, cultural, charity and intellectual initiatives, PUN not only strengthens the Pakistani-Norwegian community but also fosters understanding, collaboration and lasting ties between the peoples of Pakistan and Norway.

PWWU founded — support for Pakistani workers in Norway
Pakistan Union Norway (PUN) traces its origins to the Pakistan Worker Welfare Union (PWWU), a pioneering organization established in 1970 to support the Pakistani community in Norway. Annual tax filing guidance and authenticity certification services for Pakistani community members.
1973
Officially registered — legal, translation & document services
PWWU played a crucial role in providing assistance with translation, authenticity certification of vital records and public documents and guidance in completing annual tax filings. Recognizing its importance to the community, PWWU was officially registered in 1973 formalizing its mission to serve and protect the interests of Pakistanis living in Norway.
1995
Renamed Pakistan Union Norway (PUN) — new board elected Mr. Qamar Iqbal elected as leader
Over the years, as the community grew and its needs evolved, the organization underwent a strategic restructuring in 1995. With the consent of its members, PWWU was transformed into Pakistan Union Norway (PUN) reflecting a broader vision and renewed commitment. The same year, a new board was established for PUN and the newly elected leader, Mr. Qamar Iqbal, embarked on additional strategic work to develop the organization.
2000
Humanitarian aid to Edhi Foundation, Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Kidney Centre & Sundas Foundation
A cornerstone of its efforts is its extensive humanitarian work through which PUN has successfully raised and delivered huge amounts in aid to support critical causes in Pakistan. This includes vital financial assistance to renowned institutions like the Edhi Foundation, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, the Kidney Centre Gujrat and the Sundas Foundation demonstrating a deep commitment to alleviating suffering and supporting healthcare.
2005
Community Legal Support
Expansion of legal aid services — helping Pakistani community with immigration, residency and citizenship applications in Norway.
2010
Cultural Diplomacy Milestones
First formal Friendship Festival organized — bringing Norwegian and Pakistani communities together through art, music and food.
2015
Youth & Education Initiatives
Launch of youth programs and scholarship drives supporting Pakistani students in Norway and Pakistan.
2020
Digital Expansion & COVID Relief
PUN launched online community support during COVID-19 — coordinating emergency relief and digital outreach programs.
2025
PUN continues to grow as a leading platform for cultural, diplomatic and humanitarian work between Norway and Pakistan.
